Gowling WLG welcomes insolvency lawyer Sam Gabor to its Calgary office

16 December 2022

Sam Gabor, an accomplished insolvency lawyer qualified in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, has joined Gowling WLG as counsel in the firm's Calgary office.

Sam focuses his practice on complex insolvencies, restructurings and bankruptcies, and the difficult disputes that often surround them. Harnessing a broad knowledge of debtor-creditor law, he routinely acts on behalf of secured lenders, court-appointed officers (including receivers, trustees and proposal trustees), borrowers, and other interested parties in lending scenarios. Sam has acted on matters across various industries including real estate, technology, agriculture, oil & gas, and transportation.

Sam complements his practice with sophisticated experience and knowledge across a range of new and emerging technologies, including with respect to blockchain, cryptocurrency, web3 and the metaverse. He has particular insight into how Canadian lending and security laws apply, or could apply, in such virtual landscapes. He writes frequently on these topics; some of his recent articles include "The metaverse: Personal property security in digital assets" (Lexology) and "Structuring a loan in the metaverse: What you need to know" (Tech Law Talks).

"Sam brings a distinct future-focused perspective to his insolvency and restructuring practice, one that is sure to benefit our clients greatly as the world – and our firm – delves ever deeper into the metaverse and web3," said Regina Corrigan, managing partner of Gowling WLG's Calgary office.

Outside of his practice, Sam volunteers on the legal committee of the Canadian Blockchain Consortium's (CBC), a not-for-profit organization founded to "unite Canada's diverse community of blockchain technology business owners, developers, adopters and those interested in exploring the technology's transformative potential."
