The Canada Arab Business Council (CABC), Canada's not-for-profit association focused exclusively on promoting reciprocal trade and investment between Canada and the Arab world, has recently elected Gowling WLG partner Ruba El-Sayegh to its board of directors as vice-chair.

Since 1983, the CABC has fostered increased trade, investment, business and economic relations between Canada and the Arab world. The Council undertakes regular conferences and other events in Canada, such as the Canada-Arab Economic Forum and various export business seminars, with a view to strengthening commercial ties between Arab states and Canada by connecting people, businesses and government.

Based in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office, Ruba is a partner in the firm's Advocacy Department. Ruba practices in embassy law where she serves as outside general counsel. Ruba is also leader of the firm's Arab States Desk. In this role, she focuses on exploring business development and trade opportunities between Canada and the MENA.

Fluent in Arabic, Ruba has been heavily involved with CABC for several years, lending her legal and sectors insights to a range of webinar events and panel discussions.

"The CABC serves as an important bridge to Canadians and the Arab world, providing economic growth and business opportunities in both Canada and the Arab states," says Ruba. "I am honoured to have been elected by my peers and look forward to furthering positive business development and trade opportunities."

Gowling WLG's former CEO Scott Jolliffe previously served as chair of the CABC for a three-year term. Scott now holds the position of past chair, and remains actively involved with the business of the CABC, serving as a mentor and adviser to the newly elected management team.
