Matthew Bernardo joins Gowling WLG's Infrastructure and Construction Group

10 January 2023

Gowling WLG is pleased to announce that Matthew Bernardo has joined the firm's Infrastructure and Construction Group as a partner in Toronto.

An experienced corporate lawyer who has advised on a range of complex infrastructure projects in Canada and the United States, Matthew brings practical sector knowledge and a strategic business perspective to all of his client engagements.

Matthew represents clients across the infrastructure and projects sector– including procurement agencies, equity developers, owners, contractors and service providers/facility managers, under a variety of project delivery models and in connection with a variety of infrastructure sub-sectors, and at all stages of the project lifecycle. His practice also includes corporate M&A transactions.

Prior to joining Gowling WLG, Matthew most recently served as a North American counsel for Acciona, a major multinational infrastructure company headquartered in Spain, in the pursuit and delivery of infrastructure solutions for public and private owners. In this role, he advised the organization on legal, commercial and financing aspects of complex project pursuits in both Canada and the United States and under both traditional and alternative delivery models.

Before this, Matthew was a corporate and infrastructure partner in the Toronto office of a major global law firm. Outside of his legal practice, Matthew routinely speaks and writes on topics related to construction law and infrastructure development in Canada.

"In many jurisdictions, infrastructure projects are essential to a region's economic development but are often large, complex and subject to political and legislative restraints," said Ted Betts, head of Gowling WLG's Infrastructure and Construction Group. "We are thrilled to welcome Matthew to our dynamic team – his in-house experience and business perspective will be invaluable to our clients."
