Ash Gupta is a partner at Gowling WLG and leader of the National Tax Practice Group. His practice focuses on various areas of domestic and international taxation.
Ash has acted for fund sponsors, promoters and investors in connection with domestic and multi-jurisdictional funds, both on the fund formation and downstream investment side. He has also advised public and private corporations with respect to inbound mergers and acquisitions into Canada, as well as Canadian companies expanding internationally.
Ash's practice also includes advising with respect to complex insolvency and turnaround tax restructurings, inbound and outbound innovative hybrid debt/equity instruments, public market debt and equity financing transactions, planning and structuring project finance/securitization transactions, as well as structuring and implementing tax-driven reorganizations of private and public corporations.
In 2014, Ash received two awards from the International Tax Review for acting as lead Canadian counsel on both the North American Financial Services deal of the year as well as the North American Private Equity deal of the year.
Ash was called to the Bar in 1996 after obtaining his LLB from the University of Western Ontario. He is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Bar Association and the Canadian Tax Foundation.
Ash is also a frequent speaker and panellist at various Canadian and international conferences on a wide range of Canadian and cross-border tax topics.
