Daniel Derkach

Daniel Derkach is a summer student in Gowling WLG's Toronto office. He is completing his JD at Western University, including an area of concentration certificate in intellectual property (IP), information and technology.

Daniel is a co-founder and student director of the Western IP & Innovation Legal Clinic (WIPILC). He is also the director of operations for the Western IP Association and a co-chair of the Western Law Wellness committee. Daniel won the Gordon F. Henderson Award for Best Respondent Factum at the 2022 Harold G. Fox Moot (focusing on IP law) and first place at the 2021 Legate Medical Malpractice Moot.

Prior to attending law school, Daniel was a neural stem cell researcher with multiple publications and was heavily engaged in youth mental health advocacy. His research focused on brain repair following treatment for pediatric brain tumours and ischemic stroke. He completed an MSc and BSc in neuroscience and cell & molecular biology at the University of Toronto.

Daniel will focus his summer in the firm's Intellectual Property Group.
