Joel Hacker

Joel is a summer student in Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office. He is completing his JD at the University of Saskatchewan College of Law and is set to graduate in the spring of 2023.

Prior to law school, Joel completed his BA in law at Carleton University in 2020.

Throughout his legal studies, Joel has taken various courses in several different areas of law. He has enjoyed courses in labour & employment law, Aboriginal law, entertainment law, and negotiation & dispute resolution. In addition to membership in several law clubs and societies, Joel will also serve as a third-year class representative on the University of Saskatchewan Law Students’ Association (LSA) in the upcoming 2022-2023 academic year. His role will involve representing the interests and concerns of the “3L” cohort at LSA meetings, on campus and at student-run events.

After completing his first year of law school in 2021, Joel opted to spend his summer as a volunteer contributing writer for a national blog, “Law School Life & Beyond.” In this role, Joel contributed articles and video responses revolving around his experiences and insights from law school. His aim was to guide and help fellow law students and support pre-law students in the admissions process. Joel also served as a volunteer note-taker from 2016 to 2019 for Carleton University’s Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities.

Joel thrives on being part of a team and working with people. During university, he worked as a security guard with Commissionaires Security in Ottawa, serving exclusively at Department of National Defence locations from 2017 to 2020.
