Julie Lane

Julie Lane is a partner in Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office. Her practice focuses on regulatory and commercial law, with a particular emphasis on alcohol regulatory and public procurement matters.

In her regulatory practice, Julie helps guide clients through the complex framework for bringing alcoholic products to market. She has in-depth knowledge of the laws and regulations governing the importation, production, distribution, marketing and advertising, and sale of alcoholic beverages in Ontario.

Her work includes regular interactions with federal and provincial regulatory bodies such as the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, Health Canada, the Canada Border Services Agency and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Julie complements her regulatory work by providing strategic advice to clients on complex public procurements, government initiatives and the negotiation of commercial agreements resulting from these activities.

Prior to joining Gowling WLG, Julie was the Chief Legal Officer at the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO), where she led the legal services department and oversaw all legal and regulatory matters involving the LCBO. Julie played an integral role in the introduction of beer and wine sales in grocery stores in Ontario in 2015, and the legalization of recreational cannabis in 2018.
