Rachel Armstrong

Rachel Armstrong is one of the fastest rising stars of the Middle East Intellectual Property (IP) community.

Rachel is a UK qualified solicitor. She has been practising in the Middle East since 2013 managing IP portfolios, contentious IP matters and commercial IP matters around the region and further afield for clients across a broad range of sectors including technology, media, aviation, education, hotels, leisure and retail. She has also acted for what is currently the world's largest brand, in managing their IP matters through the region. In the last 12 months, Rachel has spent time on secondment within the in-house team of the region's largest ecommerce platform, which is also one of the world's largest companies.

Experience

  • Lead IP counsel handling trademark portfolio and multi-jurisdictional IP disputes through the MENA region for one of the world's most valuable brands.
  • Support to ecommerce client as part of secondment and beyond as external counsel advising on a range of IP issues; marketing and advertising agreements; general terms and conditions; and negotiating vendor agreements in UAE and KSA.
  • Advising French fashion brand on a mix of trademark; copyright and design rights in the UAE.
  • Negotiating numerous licenses, distribution and franchise agreements for a range of clients including in the F&B and entertainment sectors.
  • Advising international cosmetic brands on screening, registration and product labelling requirements throughout the GCC.
  • Domain name management and social media takedowns handling for international brand owners.
  • Advising the world's largest hotel group on multifaceted enforcement action through the UAE Courts due to ongoing infringement of IP rights following termination of contract concerning a large Abu Dhabi hotel.
  • Regulatory and licensing advice to leading sports brand ahead of launch of OTT platform across multiple jurisdictions in the MENA region.
  • Advising hospitality, retail and airline clients on music licensing and the enforceability of collecting society rights in the UAE and wider GCC.
