Rafael Escalante Franco

Rafael is a summer law student in Gowling WLG’s Montréal office, where he will start his articling term in 2026.

He is currently completing a bachelor's degree in law at the University of Montréal and will graduate in 2025.

During his legal studies, Rafael was a research assistant for professors in aboriginal law, constitutional law and human rights, and international law. He is involved with the Canada Research Chair in Human Rights and International Restorative Justice, where he has worked on cases concerning the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IDH Court) and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). He was also a French/Spanish law intern at the NGO Lawyers Without Borders, where he worked in international human rights law.

At the Faculty of Law, Rafael acts as coordinator of the Mentoring and Tutoring group. He was also a legal intern at the University of Montréal’s legal clinic. His many commitments and leadership earned him the prestigious Loran McCall MacBain Fellowship in 2022, and he has won medals as a saxophone soloist.

Rafael is fluent in English, French and Spanish.
