The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of Canada, announced on April 24, 2015, that the Honourable Mr. Justice Marshall Rothstein wrote to the Minister of Justice, the Honourable Peter MacKay, to advise that he will retire from the Supreme Court of Canada following the end of the spring session of the Court. Justice Rothstein’s retirement will be effective Aug. 31, 2015. The Judges Act provides that a judge of the Supreme Court of Canada may, for a period of six months following his or her retirement, continue to participate in judgments with respect to cases heard prior to retiring.
Chief Justice McLachlin said, “Justice Rothstein has served on the Court with distinction, and made enormous contributions to the Court and to Canada. He is a wonderful colleague and friend who will be greatly missed.”
For his part, Justice Rothstein said, “Upon my retirement, I will have been a judge for over 23 years, including more than nine years as a judge of the Supreme Court of Canada. I am grateful for this privilege and mindful of the honour and public trust that attach to the holding of judicial office in Canada.”
Justice Rothstein was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada on March 1, 2006, after serving over 13 years as a judge of the Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal, and a distinguished career at the Manitoba Bar.
