Bio
Austin D. Nguyen is an articling student in Gowling WLG's Calgary office. He obtained his MSc (Microbiology & Biochemistry) and JD from the University of Calgary in 2019 and 2022, respectively.
During law school, Austin was a summer research assistant for Dr. Gregory Hagen, working on several topics including patent law, telecommunications regulation, artificial intelligence, and legal ethics. He was active in several organizations and clubs, including the University of Calgary's Student Legal Assistance (SLA) as a caseworker, Pro Bono Students Canada as a volunteer for the Consent Project, the University of Calgary's Faculty of Law EDI committee as a student representative, and the Diversity & Law Society (DLS) as VP External and President.
Austin participated in several advocacy events and moots including the BLG Trial Competition, the Julius Alexander Isaac Moot, and the Bennett Jones Health Law Moot, for which he was awarded Top Oralist for the University of Calgary team. Austin also completed the University of Windsor IP Law Clinic's Claiming Inventions: Philosophies, Principles and Practices summer program.
Prior to law school, Austin completed scientific research projects in the areas of clinical microbiology and microbial metabolism. As part of these projects, he was also trained in analytical chemistry instrumentation including high-pressure liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). He was also a part-time piano and music theory instructor for twelve years.
Austin has an interest in intellectual property law, litigation, and business law.
