Chris Macaulay

Chris Macaulay is an associate in Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office and a member of the Disputes Department. His practice focuses on commercial litigation and arbitration, where he advises clients across a broad range of industries on complex and high-stakes disputes.

Chris has experience handling matters involving construction and infrastructure projects, franchise and dealer relationships, commercial leasing, professional liability, product liability, and jurisdictional issues. He has defended a diverse range of clients, including regulated health professionals, developers, contractors, financial institutions, sports and fitness entities, IT and software providers, government agencies, Crown corporations, private security firms, and corporate directors, and is known for delivering practical, strategic advice in contentious situations.

Before joining Gowling WLG, Chris served as in-house counsel to one of Canada’s largest construction companies. In that role, he worked closely with executive and management teams, providing strategic guidance on infrastructure, healthcare, and commercial and residential projects across North America. His in-house experience gives him a deep understanding of the business and operational realities his clients face.

Chris also practised at boutique civil litigation firms, where he gained experience advocating before all levels of court in Ontario as well as numerous administrative tribunals.

Drawing on both his private practice and in-house background, Chris brings a pragmatic, business-oriented approach to dispute resolution. He focuses on delivering clear, efficient advocacy and keeping sight of the broader objectives driving each mandate.
