Bio
Michael D. Barbour is a summer law student in Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office. He is completing his juris doctor at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law.
During law school, Michael volunteered with Pro Bono Students Canada and the 519 Community Centre to assist with their Trans ID Clinic, where he helped two-spirit, trans and non-binary individuals with ID applications, name changes and gender marker changes.
Prior to law school, Michael completed an Honours bachelor of science in molecular genetics and a research certificate in biological sciences at the University of Alberta. His research focused on the immune response of avian cells to influenza viruses and the establishment of a novel cell line. Michael was a three-time recipient of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s Undergraduate Student Research Award.
Michael also worked in aquatics recreation as a lifeguard, swim instructor and program coordinator for a decade before entering law school.
Michael will focus his summer term in the firm’s Intellectual Property Group.
