Jim Smellie, a senior partner in Gowling WLG's Calgary office, has received the Canadian Energy Law Forum's Energy Bear Award for his contributions to energy regulatory law.

The Forum, an organization of energy legal practitioners and regulators, announced the two national recipients of this year's peer-selected awards at a virtual conference on May 27. The Energy Bear Awards recognize substantial contributions to the field by individuals who demonstrate ongoing leadership and excellence. The other recipient is Glenn Zacher, a partner at Stikeman Elliott.

Smellie is receiving the award for his many contributions over 45 years as a regulatory lawyer. His name frequently appears in peer rankings and publications that recognize his experience in the energy sector.

"I was surprised but happy and humbled that my peers would think me a candidate to join a group of past recipients with whom I have worked and for whom I have the utmost respect," said Smellie.

Smellie's practice focuses on energy regulatory matters, administrative law and litigation. In the oil and gas sector, he has appeared before courts and regulators at the provincial and federal levels, including the National energy Board/ Canada Energy Regulator, Alberta Utilities Commission, Ontario Energy Board, the Nova Scotia Utility & Review Board, , the Court of Appeal of Alberta, and the Federal Court.

Over the course of his career, Smellie has represented natural gas producers, transmission pipelines, distributors, governments, petrochemical interests, marketers and shippers, export/import authorizations and tariff issues.
