Gowling WLG is pleased to announce that Sahil Shoor, a partner in the firm’s Waterloo Region office, is the 2024 recipient of the Ontario Bar Association’s (OBA) Heather McArthur Memorial Young Lawyers' Award.

The award recognizes exceptional contributions and/or achievements by a young lawyer in the field of continuing legal education or development of the law for the benefit of the profession or the citizens of Ontario.

 

Sahil Shoor is a leading litigation and dispute resolution lawyer with a wide-ranging practice focused on major construction and infrastructure projects domestically and internationally. Called to the Bar in Ontario and British Columbia, Sahil focuses his practice on the sectors that help drive Canada’s economic development, including commercial construction, real estate development, infrastructure/civil works, power/energy (nuclear, hydro-electric, power generating stations) and major public-private partnership/transit projects.

Businesses handling complex infrastructure projects and disputes rely on Sahil for his innovative, resourceful and forward-thinking approach. He ensures that matters are resolved efficiently and in strategic alignment with clients’ long-term goals. Sahil’s proficiency in high-stakes situations involving intricate details and strict time constraints garners deep trust and dedication from his clients. In addition, Sahil has successfully dealt with issues in his cases which could implicate Canada’s national security, national defence and international relations.

As one of the first internationally trained lawyers to make partner at Gowling WLG, Sahil has become a passionate advocate for his peers. Recognized as a leader in the community, he actively mentors and supports ethnoculturally diverse lawyers entering the profession in Canada. Serving as a co-president of the Ontario Chapter of Global Lawyers Canada, Sahil assists internationally trained lawyers fulfill their aspirations to become a proud member of the legal profession in Canada.

Additionally, Sahil actively promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) values, both within his work and through mentorship. He is known in the community as a frequent speaker, writer and commentator on a variety of topics for the Law Society of Ontario, Canadian Bar Association, Ontario Bar Association, The Canadian Institute, Osgoode Certificate in Construction Law, Geotechnical Society of Canada, The Lawyers’ Daily, the Law Times and Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors.

Sahil is consistently recognized as a leading lawyer by prominent legal directories, including Chambers Canada, The Legal 500 Canada and the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, which previously included him in “Rising Stars: Leading Lawyers Under 40.

The award was presented at the Annual OBA Young Lawyers Gala on May 16th at The Pearl in Toronto.
