Startups and securities regulations: Warren Cass on investment compliance in The Logic
Speaking recently with The Logic, Warren Cass, partner in Gowling WLG’s Corporate group, discussed the regulatory challenges facing startups operating in the investment space. The article examines a recent case involving Addy, a Vancouver-based real estate investment platform, which was fined by British Columbia regulators for trading securities without proper registration.
“A lot of people lost a lot of money in crypto,” Cass said. “Regulators want companies that are innovating in the space to ‘come through the front door’ [to negotiate alternative compliance with regulations or customized exemptions] instead of skirting regulations.”
