James Stunt

James Stunt is a senior associate in the EU, Trade and Competition team, based in London. He regularly acts for clients in relation to a wide range of competition law issues, including cartel investigations, competition litigation and merger control. He also advises clients upon key facets of State aid and subsidy control issues. James is a member of the firm's UK dawn raid response team.

James assists clients in navigating complex issues of international trade, including EU and UK sanctions law, export controls, customs and trade compliance, commodity code verification and free trade agreement utilisation. He also regularly advises clients in responding to audits and investigations by UK customs authorities.

James also works on matters involving the interface between Competition and IP law, with experience in both the tech and life sciences sectors.

Experience

Competition litigation

  • Acting for Dixons Carphone and DSG Retail in relation to its damages claims in both the Competition Appeal Tribunal and the Court of Appeal on the issue of multi-lateral interchange fees.
  • Acting for Preventx Limited in securing an interim injunction in the High Court in the context of its competition law dispute with Royal Mail.

State aid and subsidy control

  • Advising a government department upon State aid concerns arising in the context of a proposed grant to assist with the clinical response to the Coronavirus pandemic.
  • Advising a local government body in relation to its State aid risk profile in the context of its licensing and procurement practices.

International trade law

  • Advising a leading multinational manufacturer on the potential application of EU and UK sanctions in relation to prospective energy projects in Russia.
  • Advising a US-based wellness brand in relation to a variety of customs compliance matters, including product classification, managing preferential tariff treatment and supply chain management.
