Jason Freedman

Jason is a partner in our commercial litigation team in London. He specialises in insolvency litigation with a focus on complex multi jurisdictional fraud and asset recovery investigations. He also advises on litigation funding arrangements. He is hands on, enjoys getting into the detail, takes a strategic and commercial approach and brings a wealth of creativity and experience to every matter.

Jason has been involved in several high profile fraud matters over the last 15 years working for English and foreign office-holders, as well as boards, individual directors and stakeholders at all levels.

Prior to joining Gowling WLG, Jason was acting for the Joint Liquidators of Greensill Limited (a subsidiary of Greensill Capital UK Limited (in administration)) in relation to a US$600 million receivables programme. He was advising the Joint Liquidators in relation to claims of c. $440 million against certain companies within the Katerra group (all of which are in Chapter 11 in the US Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of Texas, Houston Division), and leading a team in relation to document gathering and investigations generally.

Experience

  • Acting for the joint liquidators of Hellas Telecommunications (Luxembourg) II in relation to a c.€1 billion claim in the Luxembourg courts.
  • Acting Transworld Payment Solutions Limited (in liquidation) and its liquidator in relation to a c.£300 million MTIC fraud claim against First Curacao International Bank and Mr Duess.
  • Acting for the joint liquidators of Greensill Limited in relation to a $440 million debt waiver.
  • Obtaining freezing injunctions and bringing proceedings against several individuals on behalf of the joint liquidators of a group of payroll companies.
  • Advising the Special Administrator of a Gibraltarian investment fund in relation to claims for dishonest assistance and negligence against a firm of solicitors.
  • Acting for the trustees a Gibraltarian bankruptcy in relation to the investigation and recovery offshore assets.
  • Advising the liquidators of a Jersey company (previously in administration in England) in relation to disputed administration expenses.
  • Advising the liquidator of a hospitality company in relation to the recovery of monies siphoned by the director to a BVI company and used to purchase property in Barbados; Jason obtained a worldwide freezing injunction against the director and the BVI company and obtained recognition of the same in Barbados
  • Advising the liquidators of a cryptocurrency exchange that was the subject of a €30 million bitcoin fraud. Whilst the company's COMI was in England, its IT infrastructure and back office functions were managed by sister companies in Germany and Malta.

Jason is a member of the R3 Association of Business Recovery Professionals and sits on the R3 Fraud Group.
