Dr. Kiah Barton is a scientific research advisor in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office, working in the Business Law Department.
Kiah works for the Advertising & Product Regulatory Group, reviewing and analyzing scientific information, preparing scientific reports, developing regulatory strategies for natural health products, preparing the associated product licence applications for submission to Health Canada, and providing scientific support to supplemented food, cosmetic, food, and other regulatory projects.
Kiah holds a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Guelph, where she contributed to the publication of several peer-reviewed scientific publications, reviews, and book chapters on plant cell biology and microscopy.
Prior to joining Gowling WLG, Kiah worked as a post-doctoral researcher and research scientist as part of a joint project between the University of Ottawa and a plant biotechnology corporation, aiming to realize plant molecular farming as a cost-effective alternative to conventional methods for industrial protein production. In this role, she developed plant systems for the expression and extraction of naturally occurring and novel synthetic proteins, prepared applications and reports for private and government funding opportunities, and investigated the regulatory, environmental and social considerations for plant molecular farming in Canada and globally.
