Michael Giesbrecht

Michael Giesbrecht is an associate in Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office.

Michael has a diverse practice in both commercial litigation and insurance defence covering a wide range of contractual, motor vehicle, property damage, personal injury, and professional liability disputes. He has appeared before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Small Claims Court, and the Ontario Provincial Offences Court.

A graduate of the University of Ottawa’s English Common Law Program, Michael has a particular interest in arbitration, which was inspired by his participation on the University’s Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot team. Michael subsequently focused his studies on arbitration, including writing a paper on how Canadian courts approach allegations of arbitrator bias.

Prior to entering law school, Michael held various legislative, communications, and administrative roles on Parliament Hill. He also brings extensive experience in political organizing and campaigning, having served as a campaign manager for a major political party’s candidate in the 2021 federal election.
