Gowling WLG takes home top honours in Aboriginal and Insurance Law at Benchmark Canada Awards

22 February 2016

Gowling WLG had another impressive evening at the Benchmark Canada Awards gala in Toronto last week, taking home the top litigation awards for its Aboriginal Law and Insurance Law practices.

For the first time, the firm was named Aboriginal Law firm of the Year, and Maxime Faille — national leader of the firm-wide Aboriginal Law Group — was named Aboriginal Lawyer of the Year. Both awards were accepted by Jaimie Lickers, an associate in Gowling WLG's Hamilton office and a rising star in her own right in the firm's Aboriginal law practice.

"This is an extraordinary testament to the amazing work of our group, not just this past year but also those leading up to it," said Faille from Ottawa. "Both awards reflect the incredible talent, passion and dedication of the entire group."

It was also a triumphant evening for the firm's Insurance & Professional Liability Group. For the third consecutive year, Benchmark Litigation named Gowling WLG Canada Insurance Law Firm of the Year. Mike Adlem, leader of the group, accepted the award on behalf of the firm.

"The fact that we've been recognized as Insurance Law Firm of the Year three years in a row is a wonderful tribute to our great clients and the extraordinary quality of the work performed by our insurance lawyers in all of our offices," said Adlem.

In addition, Gowling WLG received nominations for "firm of the year" in the areas of insolvency, intellectual property, medical/health law, and product liability. The firm's lawyers were also nominated for "litigator of the year" in the insurance law, medical/health law and product liability law categories. Of particular note, David Bishop was again nominated for Alberta Litigator of the Year after winning the award in 2015.

Held annually by Benchmark Litigation, the Benchmark Canada Awards ceremony brings together leading litigators and litigation law firms from across the country to recognize excellence in a range of practice areas. The only publication to focus exclusively on Canadian litigation practices, Benchmark employs a comprehensive assessment program to distinguish the top litigators in the country.

With more than 1,500 legal professionals in 18 cities across Canada, the U.K., Europe, the Middle East and Asia, Gowling WLG delivers comprehensive, practical and strategic solutions that address a broad range of litigation matters — both in the courtroom and through negotiation and alternative dispute resolution — so clients can achieve their desired results as quickly as possible.
