Andrew Maggs

Andrew Maggs is Senior Counsel, Patent Litigation in the IP team. He is an experienced patent litigator and strategist with more than 16 years' experience of working with clients in the telecommunications, technology and engineering sectors, advising them on strategy in relation to high-value patent disputes which often have a multi-jurisdictional aspect. Andrew helped establish our Guangzhou office in 2010, and is a key contact within the UK for clients seeking to resolve their IP disputes in China. Andrew was first listed as a rising star (Patents) in Expert Guides Rising Stars since 2015, and described as one of the "rising stars in the team" in the MIP IP Stars Handbook (Patents) 2017. Andrew is a firm-wide mental health champion, and responsible for mental health aspects of inclusivity within the IP team, as part of the IP team's inclusion strategy.

Andrew has particular expertise in relation to the telecommunications sector. He has extensive expertise in relation to SEP/FRAND matters, including successfully advising InterDigital in its disputes against Lenovo and Nokia, and TQ Delta in its dispute against Zyxel. Andrew also has significant experience in relation to non-SEP telecommunications disputes, including successfully enforcing two of ASSIA's DSL patents against BT, and acting for SSH against Sony in a dispute relating to secure communications over public networks, in both cases before the Court of Appeal. Andrew oversees the provision of extensive pan-European pre-action advice for clients, including in relation to the merits of infringement and validity arguments, the relative merits of different European jurisdictions, exhaustion of rights, associated antitrust issues, and jurisdictional disputes. Clients have praised Andrew for "reset[ting] expectations on how brilliant lawyers can be in the engineering area!"

Other technology and engineering patent disputes Andrew has been responsible for include acting for GKN against Remfry (refuelling couplings), Hexatronic against Emtelle (DSL cables), Japan Tobacco, Inc against Fontem Holdings (e-cigarettes) and Stüder Professional Audio GmbH against Calrec Audio (audio mixing desks).
