Jean-Sébastien Clément is a partner in Gowling WLG's Montréal office. For over 20 years, his practice has focused on Aboriginal law, with a particular emphasis on matters pertaining to self-governance, environment, natural resources, forestry, education, socio-economic development and administration of justice.
During his career, Jean-Sébastien participated in numerous litigation cases, including constitutional cases, in first instance and in appeal, all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada.
He has also been involved in negotiating and implementing various agreements, including the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, the Paix des Braves Agreement, the Cree-Canada New Relationship Agreement, and the governance agreements with the Crees.
His practice allows him to address private law issues as well as public law issues for various Indigenous entities.
Prior to his involvement in Aboriginal law, Jean-Sébastien was a prison law practitioner.
He is also involved with Lawyers Without Borders Canada.
Jean-Sébastien plays double bass in various jazz, blues and other music ensembles in the Montréal area. He has played at concerts in Montréal and has recording experience.
