Peter Zhang

Peter (Dongcheng) Zhang is a partner at Gowling WLG, where he leads the firm's China Initiative for the Toronto office.

Admitted to practise law in Ontario and China, Peter's main areas of expertise include corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions and foreign direct investment. He holds particular experience in assisting Chinese high net worth individual clients investing in Canada, and dealing with immigration, regulatory and various legal matters in Canada. Peter also advises clients in intellectual right protection, licensing, incorporating joint ventures in China.

Fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese and English, Peter spent 10 years working as an investment banker at tier one investment banking and research institutions in China. Prior to joining Gowling WLG, he was a partner at an international law firm based in Asia.

  • Corporate M&A: purchaser's counsel in transactions for Huawei Technologies, CITICPE, New Horizon Capital, Ping An Venture Capital, and NARI Group (a subsidiary of State Grid)
  • H shares: underwriter's counsel for Morgan Stanley, CICC, UBS and others in a 2011 CCB follow-on offering
