Application process

In accordance with the recruiting criteria among Montréal area law firms, Gowling WLG hires students two years before they join the firm. Students begin their employment as full-time students following their second year or during the summer that precedes Bar School. Once Bar School is complete, students participate in a six-month articling program.

Gowling WLG recruits in accordance with any and all applicable law society guidelines. Gowling WLG Montréal is an equal opportunity employer. That said, our firm is dedicated to providing equitable opportunities for employment and advancement, and to creating a more inclusive workplace for all our people, as we believe that diverse professional and administrative teams make better decisions. Applicants who are Indigenous, racialized BIPOC, members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, and persons with a disability are encouraged to self-identify.

Career fairs

Career fairs are a great opportunity for students to gather information about a large number of law firms and government organizations. Prior to the career fair day, students should obtain a list of the law firms and government organizations attending their school's career fair. From this list, students should determine those firms or organizations in which they are most interested. Students should then develop a plan to best take advantage of the career fair and ensure they visit each firm or organization identified. Before arriving at the career fair, students should consider what qualities or attributes they are seeking in a law firm and should prepare questions to ask of the representatives to elicit such information. Students should take a copy of the firm brochures, promotional materials and representatives' business cards.

Professional development

Our comprehensive seminar program spans a wide variety of practice areas, and our constructive mentoring programs provide students with opportunities to work with – and learn from – our diverse and experienced professionals. Our students are also encouraged to define their own development, and to seek out and experience the work in which they are most interested.  Gowling WLG is committed to providing comprehensive guidance and feedback to each student with respect to the work assigned.

What our people say...

"Our success is based on a recruiting policy that strives to attract the most talented candidates. To ensure its future growth, the firm's Montréal office welcomes students-at-law from Canadian and foreign universities. Our articling program has always been a precious resource serving the firm's expansion. A good number of our associates are former articling students."
