Guillaume Lavoie Ste-Marie

Guillaume Lavoie Ste-Marie is a partner in Gowling WLG's Intellectual Property Group based in Montréal. Known for his pragmatic approach and results-driven litigation strategies, he advises clients in various industries, including broadcasting, television, motion pictures, music, software and video games, industrial products, food and beverage, fast moving consumer goods, and retail goods more generally.

Clients often turn to Guillaume not only to litigate disputes, but to help determine how and when intellectual property rights should be enforced in support of broader commercial objectives. He works closely with in-house teams, rights holders and business leaders to develop enforcement strategies that reflect both the legal and commercial dimensions of a matter. He represents Canadian and international clients before the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal, and the Superior Court of Québec.

He has particular experience obtaining and enforcing extraordinary remedies, including Anton Piller orders, Mareva injunctions and interlocutory injunctions. He is frequently engaged on matters involving digital enforcement, emerging technologies and evolving areas of intellectual property law, and has developed novel remedies including various types of site-blocking order and seizure orders involving international and cloud-based assets.
