Jean-Sébastien Clément is a partner in Gowling WLG's Montréal office.
He has been working with Indigenous organizations for several decades.
Most of his work is related to Indigenous self-governance. He is involved in various legal matters related to the environment, the development of natural resources, forestry, lands, education, socio-economic development, policing, social services, procurement and other governmental matters.
During his career, Jean-Sébastien participated in several litigation cases, including constitutional cases, in first instance and in appeal, all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada.
He has been involved in negotiating and implementing various agreements. Among other things, he has worked on issues related to the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, the Paix des Braves Agreement, and various Cree governance agreements.
He has also been involved in drafting legislation, by-laws and decisions.
His practice allows him to address private law issues as well as public law issues.
Prior to his involvement in Indigenous law, Jean-Sébastien was a prison law practitioner.
He has worked with Lawyers Without Borders Canada and is involved with the Association des orchestres des jeunes de la Montérégie.
Jean-Sébastien plays bass in various jazz, blues, folklore, funk, chanson and other music ensembles in the Montréal area. He plays live regularly and has recording experience.
