Find out what life in our team means for them

LIZ GANE, PARTNER, PENSIONS

What's your background?

I trained with the firm and qualified into the pensions team. I chose pensions because it combined technical law with a human touch.

Why did you choose to work here?

When I was looking for a firm to train with I wanted to find one with a good, growing reputation. But equally as important, I wanted to join a firm where I would fit in and enjoy work. I've stayed here for 20 years because I've found a firm with a strong culture and a successful, supportive team – a team in which I could develop my career at my own pace, and balance the demands of the job with my family life.

What was the recruitment process like?

I had to give a presentation and take part in a group exercise, and then have an interview with a partner and a member of the HR team. Everyone was really friendly and made the candidates feel at ease. We had a tour of the office and met some current trainees.

What makes Gowling WLG different to other firms?

The first thing that springs to mind is how friendly everyone is. It has always stood out to me. People here are genuinely supportive and want others to succeed. You see that through initiatives like More Women, Open House and Family Matters, and also through the individual support that's on offer – mentoring and coaching.

What's the most surprising thing you've learned about working here?

The partners do actually work at the partners' conference…

What do you do outside work?

I love spending time with family and friends. The usual stuff! I also get involved in fundraising events at my children's school, and I try and find time to go to the gym or swim before work. I wish I had time to follow the rugby league – Wigan Warriors – more closely, but you can't have it all!
