Nelson Godfrey to lead Gowling WLG's Trademarks, Brands & Designs Group in Canada

16 January 2024

Gowling WLG is pleased to announce Nelson Godfrey as co-leader of the firm’s global Trademarks, Brands & Designs Group. He succeeds Martha Savoy, whose term concluded at the end of last year.

As part of his new role, Nelson will work collaboratively with his global colleagues – including his UK counterpart, John Coldham – to identify innovative new ways to help clients build and protect their brand equity amid a changing IP landscape.

“In Canada and around the world, the trademark profession finds itself at a significant crossroads, with rapid advances in technology giving rise to new threats for brand owners, difficult questions for legislators, and sophisticated new enforcement tools for IP professionals,” said Nelson.  “I’m excited by the opportunity to help guide and grow our practice during this unique moment, all with a view to serving our clients better.”

To the leadership position, Nelson brings extensive experience across the entire trademark lifecycle – from prosecution to international portfolio management through to enforcement – including with some of the world’s most renowned brands. He pairs this experience with a strong record of leadership in the Canadian trademarks field, including having contributed directly to initiatives to modernize Canada's Trademarks Act and related practices before the Canada Trademarks Opposition Board.
