Gowling WLG is pleased to share that its own Jennifer Laura King and Rodney Northey, along with Alastair R. Lucas of the University of Calgary, have co-authored the 2018 reissue of Halsbury's Laws of Canada - Environment (LexisNexis Canada).
A comprehensive and authoritative guide to Canadian environmental law, the new edition covers a range of important topics, including environmental impact assessments, international obligations and civil liability issues.
Climate change. Environmental toxins. Ozone depletion. Mass extinctions and species at risk. The growing recognition of the fragility of the world's ecosystems and the growing emphasis placed on sustainable development and responsible resource management have placed the environment at the forefront of Canada's social, political and, inevitably, legal agenda. The reach of environmental laws can now extend into everyday commercial transactions, corporate takeovers, real estate development, and criminal prosecution - virtually every area of legal practice.
Newly revised and thoroughly updated, the Halsbury's Environment (2018 Reissue) title provides a clear and straightforward understanding of the maze of laws, regulations and legal issues that frame the subject area of environmental law.
Jennifer Laura King is a partner in Gowling WLG's Toronto office and a member of the firm's Environmental Law Group. Her practice encompasses an array of complex matters focusing largely on environmental, land use planning and Indigenous issues. These matters currently include environmental assessments, complex development applications and approval regimes involving the environment. Over the course of her career, she has served as legal counsel on over 20 reported decisions before all levels of court in Ontario and tribunals, including the Ontario Municipal Board / Local Planning Appeal Tribunal.
Rodney Northey is the leader of Gowling WLG's Canadian Environmental Law Group. Certified by the Law Society of Ontario as a Specialist in Environmental Law, Northey has more than 28 years of experience in the field. With a practice focused largely on environmental approvals, hearings and appeals, he has advised on environmental assessment strategies at the municipal, provincial and federal levels.
Between 2004 and 2006, Northey served on an Ontario Ministry of the Environment panel responsible for improving provincial environmental assessment processes for green projects in the energy, transportation and waste sectors. More recently, Northey served on a four-person expert panel assembled by the federal minister of environment and climate change to review and recommend improvements to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.
