Although there is currently no federal data protection law across the UAE, there are a number of laws that govern privacy and the disclosure of data in the UAE. Now, with the announcement of the DIFC Data Protection Law, DIFC based companies must comply by October 2020. More importantly, this is an example of the data protection landscape in the UAE and the Middle East embracing international data protection standards and aligning with the GDPR in particular. It is a matter of time before we have a federally applicable data protection law in the UAE that will apply and affect us all. We all need to be ready to comply now and in the future.

In this session Tony Fielding, Head of Technology in Dubai and Jocelyn Paulley, Co-head of Privacy and Cyber Security in the UK discuss the current outlook on data protection generally in the Middle East and specifically in the UAE; looking to the UK and EU two years on from the GDPR for key developments, guidelines and thoughts on what we can expect here in the UAE, focussing on:

  • What the new DIFC Data Protection Laws mean to you;
  • How to get ready to comply;
  • What GDPR looks like two years on and how that will shape data protection in the UAE; and
  • Practical tips you can apply within your business now.
