As trade tensions between Canada and the United States continue to escalate, CTV News Channel recently spoke with Jacques J.M. Shore, C.M., partner in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office and former leader of the firm's National Government Affairs Group, about the implications of U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to impose 50% tariffs on Canadian imports. Jacques discussed the legal, political and economic ramifications of the announcement, including the potential for legal challenges, the importance of a coordinated Canadian response, and the need to return to the negotiating table.

During the interview, Jacques emphasized that prolonged tariff escalation would have significant consequences for businesses and consumers on both sides of the border, warning that continued retaliatory measures threaten integrated North American supply chains and undermine efforts to reach a lasting trade agreement under CUSMA.

"It's very unfortunate, because the fact of the matter is the tit for tat... really harms industry. It harms companies, it harms our supply chain... and at the end of the day, this is not helping anybody."
