Darren Johnston

Darren Johnston is an associate in Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office, practising in the Advocacy Group. His practice focuses on insurance and professional liability, commercial litigation, as well as administrative law matters.

Darren has appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. On the advisory side, Darren is also counsel to the City of Ottawa Election Compliance Audit Committee, the City of Ottawa Property Standards and License Appeals Committee, as well as City of Ottawa Administrative Penalty System.

Darren has contributed to trial preparations for complex bodily injury matters and has worked on a wide range of files, including coverage disputes, property losses, and injury claims. He also has experience across commercial disputes, including contract and defence matters.

Before entering law, Darren served for 17 years with Canada’s Tier-One Special Operations Force, Joint Task Force Two, in the Department of National Defence. His service included numerous high-profile domestic and international operations of national importance, for which he received multiple medals and commendations. Darren’s service with Joint Task Force Two brings a unique dimension to his practice, with strategic planning, and resilience honed in high-pressure environments.
