Charlotte McDonald is a partner and registered trademark agent in Gowling WLG's Toronto office. Her practice focuses on intellectual property litigation and trademark prosecution, where she delivers strategic counsel to clients navigating complex IP disputes and building valuable trademark portfolios.
Charlotte brings extensive Federal Court experience to every matter, having served as counsel in patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, and Patented Medicine Prices Review Board disputes. She has successfully participated in multiple Federal Court trials and judicial reviews and regularly manages complex trademark oppositions and expungement proceedings before the Trademark Opposition Board. A skilled negotiator, Charlotte frequently resolves matters prior to trial through effective court-assisted and independent mediations.
Charlotte advises clients on the full spectrum of IP matters, from enforcement of copyright, trademark, and patent rights to licensing, assignments, and strategic trademark opinions on registrability and use.
Charlotte manages trademark portfolios of all sizes in Canada and internationally, serving clients across diverse industries including software, education, cosmetics, publishing, environmental conservation, cannabis, food and beverage, and consumer products.
Charlotte served as Chair of the Executive Committee for the Intellectual Property Section of the Canadian Bar Association (2025–2026). She is an active member of leading professional organizations, including the Editorial Board of the Canadian Intellectual Property Review, the IPIC Indigenous IP Committee, the INTA Indigenous Rights Committee, and multiple IPO committees including the International Trademark Law and Practice Committee, Canadian Practice Committee, and Women in IP Committee.
