The collapse of Canada-U.S. trade talks over the weekend has raised questions about the issues that ultimately prevented negotiators from reaching an agreement. Speaking with CBC News, Wendy Wagner, head of Gowling WLG’s International Trade & Customs Group, discussed the challenges facing Canada at the negotiating table.

One of the reported sticking points in the talks was a proposed restriction on Canada’s ability to deepen trade ties beyond North America, a provision Wendy said would be difficult to reconcile with the uncertainty that has prompted Canada to diversify its trading relationships in the first place.

“The last year and a half, we've been put in a situation of having to diversify because of that uncertain trading relationship with the United States. If that's cut off and we're putting all of our eggs in the North American basket, we'd better have some certainty. To date that's not what we've seen.”
